Bumbo Play Tray

How to attach  the Bumbo Play Tray

Many parents agree that the Bumbo Play Tray is a fantastic idea and that it makes a valuable addition to the bumbo baby seat.
That said some parents, especially of larger children complain that the white Bumbo Play Tray is extremely difficult to attach.

So how can I easily put on the tray?

If you have a small child you could affix the tray before seating baby.  This isn’t always possible though and so these instructions may come in handy.

  1. Seat your little one comfortably in the chair on the floor.
  2. Push the top lip of the tray over the leg divider without catching any of babies skin or clothes and watch out for little fingers which usually try and grab at anything you are doing!
  3. Squash the base of the seat up towards the bottom lip of the tray and slide it under the base, without tilting the seat too much.
  4. Relax and make yourself a cuppa whilst your tot busies themselves with their toys.  You’ve probably earned it.
This video may give a better visual representation of the above instructions, maybe next time I will try with a baby in the chair!

Still having trouble?

Bumbo must have listened to parents who have had trouble with this as they have released an opaque play tray which affixes directly to the leg divider so that mummy or daddy doesn’t have to mess about tilting the seat with their child in it!

Bumbo Play Tray

The Bumbo Play Tray is made of food safe, easy to clean plastic and attatches easily to your child’s chair.  The tray comes in one size only and therefore fits on all seats regardless of colour.

How does the tray secure to the chair?

The trays currently come in two different designs, the white one pictured here which attaches over the middle of the leg separator and secures under the bottom of the chair.  The second design is an opaque model featured below which attaches to the chair in a different way.  It hugs the leg separator on the sides and has an attachment which fits over the top, there are also channels which keep the try in place by fitting on the arms of the babysitter.

How can the play tray be used?

You can use the chair for many different things depending on the age of your child.  In the first instance you can place toys on the tray and baby can play with them, however when the toys are dropped it could cause problems if your child leans out to try and get them.  It may therefore be better if you can find toys with suction cups so you can stick them to the tray.

The tray is perfect for feeding time especially when weaning your baby as you can place food in a bowl or plate on the tray and feed from there.  Although the Bumbo chair is not a high chair it can be used as one when your child is too small to fit in one.

As your child gets old enough to pick at snacks themselves you could present grapes, raisins or other fruits and treats for baby to feed himself with.

The use of the tray enables baby to enhance their motor skills and hand eye (or hand mouth!) coordination by putting things in baby’s reach for them to pick up at will.

A Bumbo Play

Who are Bumbo?

The Bumbo company was started in 2001 by South African, Johan Buitendach who wanted to start a business to mass produce his idea for a baby seat that was not only safe but also helped the physical development of babies.

In 2001 the first Bumbo chairs were released to the mass market, the seats are not only colourful and attractive to look at, but they can actually help your baby’s posture by enabling them to sit up “on their own”.

At the time there was nothing like the Bumbo Baby Sitter on the market and certainly nothing of such high quality at such an affordable price. Since 2001 then the company has gone from little known South African start up to something that parents the world over cannot believe they managed without.

Loved the world over

Bumbo products are now available in 130 countries around the world!  In just 11 years the Bumbo company has gone from a small warehouse employing 11 people to  a site covering over 47,000 square feet with 460 employees and another 100 jobs in the pipeline!  All of this growth has allowed the company to become trully philanthropic.

Bumbo Cares

Bumbo prove they care by donating 100% of the profits that the company make to charitable causes which enrich the lives of disadvantaged children.  Johan donated the intellectual property to the Bumbo brand to Maranatha Bana which is a charitable organisation who’s primary function is to care for the well being of underprivileged children.

Lime Green Bumbo Baby SeatThe tale of how Bumbo came about and became such a success is also a story which has both touched and improved the lives of many.

In 1996 in Pretoria, South Africa, Johan Buitendach was babysitting his 7 week old grandson Daniëll when he noticed that the curious little one was constantly looking around at his surroundings but couldn’t yet sit up without Grandpa’s help.  Rather than having to sit holding little Dan up all the time Grandpa Johan did what many parents before him have done and propped him up with some pillows, which worked well for a moment until Daniëll slipped to one side.  Not ideal and not really that safe!

Grandpa Johan had a lightbulb go off in his head, as an inventor and toolmaker he decided to build a seat himself.  He used a large chunk of polystyrene to craft a circular seat with grooves for baby’s legs, a backrest and arm rests.  When it was placed on the floor it allowed Daniëll to sit unaided in a comfortable position, this was the first Bumbo Baby Sitter.

How the Bumbo Company was started

Johan created the Bumbo company in 2001 after noting that there was no affordable seats which provided the same level of functionality as his invention.  So Johan refined his designs and began testing and developing the Bumbo Baby Sitter.

The Bumbo chairs you can buy today are made of moulded polyurethane and have a coated surface with rounded edges so that baby cannot harm themselves.  There are no cumbersome straps which are found in other similar products as the design is stable and safe when used correctly.

The larger Bumbo product range

Bumbo expanded their product range with the introduction of the Bumbo Play Tray, the Bumbo Toilet Trainer, the Bumbo Mobile and Othe products designed in the same vein to solve a problem for the parents of today.
